MIAMI– Derek Jeter would be the first to tell you he doesn’t know much about art. It was clear from an early age that something else would become his life’s calling. On Tuesday morning, however, Jeter found himself observing works of art that resembled him at the leading international contemporary and modern art fair.

Baseball and art lovers are welcome Art Miami (stand AM115) and Taglialatella Galleries can be viewed at CONTEXT Art Miami (stand B9) until Sunday JETERa collection of twelve large-scale paintings – six each of ‘The Jump’ and ‘The Swing’ – in pop artist Russell Young’s signature screenprint style, finished with ‘Diamond Dust’.

“The first reaction was, ‘Huh?’” Jeter recalled being told the concept. “The memorabilia industry has grown tremendously over the years, so it’s pretty cool to be able to partner with MLB and come up with some unique experiences. Once I had the chance to meet Russell, talk to him and see some of his work, I thought, ‘Sure. Sounds like a pretty cool idea.” It’s not something I ever expected.”

Over the summer, Jeter and Young met in New York to review a group of photos and choose two that would become the subject of the collection. They wanted action shots – one at the plate and one in the field – that were standout moments from his Hall of Fame career.

It took less than an hour for them to settle on Jeter’s signature jump throw and his first leadoff homer against the Mets in Game 4 of the 2000 World Series. Coincidentally, Young, a native of Northern England who previously spent years directing music videos and photographing the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, was present at the Game 5 clincher at Shea Stadium.

“He showed me some footage of how he does his process,” Jeter said. ‘I think that’s why he’s such a great artist. It’s not something that’s easy to do. I couldn’t just take a photo at home and get the same result. So he was great. Like I said, he has an incredible story and how he got to this place, and it was just fun. So hopefully we will work together at some point in the future.”

Since its founding in 1996, the Turn 2 Foundation has awarded more than $40 million to create and support signature programs that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol in West Michigan, New York and Florida. It recently held a fundraiser in Miami, where Jeter now lives with his family.

According to Sharlee Jeter, the foundation’s president and Jeter’s younger sister, Jeter’s Leaders program exposes high school students to the arts and takes them to museums. She and Derek learned more about art through the process.

“I love it all,” Sharlee said. “I also love seeing sports and art come together. I think it’s a great thing for Derek to be a part of, and also that part of it is giving back to his foundation and the Perry J. Cohen Foundation. It’s just an exciting experience and the artwork is exquisite.”

The Perry J. Cohen Foundation is a nonprofit organization intended to continue the legacy of Perry Cohen, a 14-year-old boy who went missing at sea on July 24, 2015, leaving Jupiter Inlet, Florida on the boat of a friend. After an eight-day, 55,000-square-nautical-mile search, the United States Coast Guard halted their efforts. The foundation, founded by his mother, Pamela Cohen, supports what he was most passionate about: the advancement of the arts, environmental, marine and wildlife education and conservation, teen entrepreneurship and boat safety education.

A 10-year-old Perry once met Derek in 2011. In subsequent years, Pamela has seen Derek at fundraisers and charity events.

“It’s very meaningful to us,” says Pamela, who remembers seeing the Jeter Homer from the collection on TV. “My son was an All-Star baseball player his whole life. He always wore No. 2 and was obsessed with Derek Jeter, like most young baseball players. His middle name was “Jacob,” so he always signed it “Jeter.”

“It’s really just something that, even though it’s been such a tragedy and so life-changing for us, to be able to collaborate with Turn 2 and with Derek, it’s something that has magically come full circle, if that makes sense. . which has been really great for us. It makes Perry’s legacy just a little brighter for us.”
